Synopsis: The movie tells the story of 2 brothers: Demi – the elder brother ( played by Obi Maduegbuna) and Tunde – the younger brother (played by Timini Egbuson).

Demi is a nerd, he is very awkward around women and infact, he has given up on Love. Tunde on the order hand already has his life planned out and is ready to get married to the love of his life. Unfortunately, their mother opposes Tunde’s marriage plans, she insists that he cannot get married before his elder brother. According to her, that goes against the order of things. Since Demi must get married before Tunde can marry the love of his life, they embark on a journey to help Demi find a wife urgently.

The storyline was not bad.

Casting and acting was good. I liked the fact that they used new/rising actors for lead male and female and I’m hoping to see more of this because it is important to continually spotlight new Nollywood actors (some of the current ones have overstayed their welcome and they have nothing new to offer).

On a normal day, I’ll complain about the fact that there were BBN stars and Instagram influencers in the movie but this time around, I won’t even fault the parade. They needed to show Demi go through different types of women before finding “the one”, so it worked for them.

Plot progression was nice and coherent, character development was great- I especially liked the transition from young Demi to older Demi, it was perfect!

But this movie lacked something very important…

It lacked heart.

Like I said earlier, the movie was nice and straight to the point but unfortunately, it was only able to paint a picture of love that was tediously boring. There was no chemistry, there was not much that was romantic about the whole thing. No “awwwwwwwwwwn” moments. It was just a very convenient situation for the involved parties. A guy (a sloppy nerd) needed a wife, a lady (a nerdy goody two shoes) needed a man.

I must say that there is nothing like a love story well told. A good love story is beautiful to watch, it can sweep you off your feet and leave you feeling good for days just thinking about the scenes. While watching the movie, you’ll feel like falling in love, you’ll be rooting for them, you would wish, gush and even blush. This movie inspired none of these emotions.

To be honest, this flaw is not peculiar to just this movie, it appears that Nollywood generally is yet to discover the unspoken, universal truths about communicating relationships and love through filmmaking. We have seen several attempts at making love stories in Nollywood but they typically fall flat.

Back to the movie. Let me mention some other issues I noticed.

  • This movie was a mini TV commercial for 5Alive juice and Bournvita. I believe there are better and more subtle ways of featuring sponsors in a movie, this was a little too much.
  • At the beginning of the movie, Demi was dreaming of a time when someone beat him up and poured juice on his face, when he woke up from the dream, there was actual juice on his face (can someone who has seen this movie confirm this? One of the issues with cinema movies is that you can’t rewind to cross check a scene)
  • Anyway, I thought we’ll see his mummy or brother in present day pouring the juice on his face to wake him up but there was no one. So I did not get that scene.
  • I also did not really get Adedimeji’s character, sometimes he spoke with an accent other times he spoke normally.
  • I thought there was something going on between Charles Inojie and the boys’ mother (played by Ayo Mogaji) because I was wondering his connection to the family. There was even a time when Demi noticed that the man and his mum had similar wristwatches but they just went silent on that aspect of the movie.
  • They are Yoruba boys so why were they calling their mother “mama”? It was like something out of Africa Magic Igbo, it did not sound right. Like I always say, it’s the little things.
  • The double wedding made me cringe, most scenes where they tried to infuse comedy were very awkward, Dija’s part was quite off, especially her appearance at the wedding with her demonic brother.
  • The last scene was a NO. Why were they all going for their honeymoon in the same car -it was not cute abeg. Finally, their mother’s call to them saying that Demi should be the first to have sex with his wife because he was the first born was another big NO for me. I cringed.

All that being said, this movie is Sidney Esiri’s (popularly known as Dr Sid) directorial debut, I must say this is not bad for a first try. We’ll be looking out for more exciting content from him.

Overall, this movie was not a bad watch. It was not as “sweet” as it should be but it certainly won’t leave a sour taste in your mouth after watching.
