FINE WINE – A REVIEW

The storyline is not new and the movie was extremely cliché. If you did not roll your eyes at least 10 times while watching this movie ehn, I’m sorry to say, you are either a cultist or a hopeless and irredeemable romantic. I cringed and rolled my eyes so many times because I felt somethings could have been done better.

However, was it a bad movie? NO.

If you like romance movies, you’ll enjoy this one. There was something very endearing about it and for some reason, you’ll find yourself watching regardless of your reservations and even appreciate some of the scenes.

Acting and casting worked really well in this movie. ONLY RMD, I repeat, ONLY RMD could have pulled off this role.

Asides from his fabulous acting skills and his natural charm, that man is fiiine. He is an embodiment of the term: aging like fine wine. I wish they would stop dyeing his hair sha, the grey hair is part of the appeal. The lead female, Kaima (played by Ego Nwosu) also did really well.

For the other actors, Tunji (played by Ademola Adedoyin) was so good, I actually hated his character but I could not understand what was going on with his hair, it was so distracting. I would have loved to see more of Nse other than the telephone conversations but they all did well.

Back to the story itself, very predictable storyline but predictability is not necessarily a bad thing. I appreciate the fact that they just went straight to the point. They had some issues with continuity, they talked about social media a lot and I would have loved to see more of the impact social media had on their budding relationship.

The movie summary said something about confronting stigmas around the age gap romance, but there was actually no stigma, nobody was against the relationship, not their family members and definitely not their friends. I don’t know why Kaima’s mother suddenly disappeared in the movie, it would have been nice to see her reaction to the relationship.

I liked Kaima’s relationship with Mr George’s daughter, there was no daughter- girlfriend rivalry or hatred typical of Nigerian films with similar storylines.

Let’s move to the most important part of this movie for me, the issues addressed. I have mixed feelings, I have questions and I really want to know your thoughts.

On one hand, I liked the fact that it tried to humanize people like Mr George (the rich and old but single and lonely). As individuals we only see a “rich man”, we don’t get to see the lonely man who desperately needs to give and receive attention and affection. His children were too busy with their lives, he needed someone. Everyone deserves love, even rich men. So lets be kind when we see these things on social media.

So I liked the fact that this movie tried to address that issue but on the other hand, I also felt like I was watching 2 men manipulate a young and impressionable girl or am I being too sensitive?

While Tunji was just a jerk who was taking advantage of Kaima, Mr George cannot be left blameless. In today’s parlance, his actions can be referred to as grooming. He was an old man grooming a young girl by giving her the things he knew she wanted. He knew he wanted her almost as soon as he met her, so the job, the accounts, the attention were all part of his strategy to entice her and that is what these rich old men do these days.

If the girl had been dating a better person, would she have fallen for him? Or because of his money she would have dated him regardless? After all, that’s what so many young ladies do these days. She was flirting with him too, she knew he liked her, she did not discourage his advances, what is the meaning of “my mother’s special pepper soup?”🙄

These are just some of the questions that came to my mind while I was watching. I know the movie is cute and all but if the main guy was one chief with an ugly accent and a gigantic stomach would you still find the movie cute or would you think “this is so creepy?”

Overall it was not a bad watch.

Rating: 6/10
