After a painful birthing experience where she lost a lot of blood and her uterus, Derin (played by Meg Otanwa) deals with a severe case of Postpartum depression.
The storyline was really nice, it sheds light on a very important topic- Postpartum Depression. It tries to spotlight the issues faced by the mother and child as well as how it affects their family.
Acting and Casting was a big win for me. They all delivered. I say it all the time that Gabriel Afolayan is an amazing actor and after watching his performance in this movie, I can only say he proved me right once again. I would however like to give special accolade to the lead actress – Meg Otanwa. She did not say much, but her expressions spoke volumes. It was the way she was able to convey so much with her eyes. I am looking forward to seeing more of her in movies this year.

The setting was the highlight of this movie for me. The house they used was so homely and familiar. It looked lived in and it was just the perfect house for the characters.
They wanted to show us the life of a middle class couple and that was what we saw. Every prop, every outfit and the lighting helped them create characters that were recognizable.
It was obvious that a lot of research went into this movie. The symptoms and stages were accurately captured. They paid attention to the little details. For example; when Derin tied the black nylon around the surgery dressing before taking a shower, I applauded them. This is because we have seen movies where they forget the location, the existence and peculiarities of a character’s injury. I was impressed that they did not forget.
Beautiful storytelling, but…
Yea, there is a but. What was that ending??? Did she have to die? I understand the need to avoid cliche endings, i understand the need to shock the audience, some will even argue that the ending mirrors real life (some victims actually die). But in real life, are there people who get better? Yes.
Are there people who actually seek help and they grow to have healthy relationships with their children? YES!!
So why insist on showing us the “real life” that is gloomy and bleak? The end was unnecessarily dark and depressing.
I know this movie was supposed to create awareness but I thought it was also supposed to empower? Postpartum depression is the reality of so many nursing mothers at the moment but what does this movie say to them and their loved ones in the long run?
I was really looking forward to them getting the message that therapy actually works, that Postpartum depression can be treated. I was thinking they would get a message of hope.
One minute it seemed Derin was getting better, it seemed she was finally going to seek help but the next minute she is in a pool of blood.
If you are looking for entertainment or you just want to unwind, this is not the movie for you.
But the intention behind this movie was not to entertain, they wanted this movie to stir up our minds, they wanted us to sit up and listen to the poignant messages being passed, to educate and also leave us wondering and pondering hours after watching. They achieved all these and more.
Overall, it was a good one. Call me sentimental, but I would have preferred a different ending.
