The summary you will find online – CAKE is a quirky romantic comedy that follows the hilarious ride of “Tomiwa Akinlolu,” a talented baker caught in a love triangle with two beautiful women.

The actual story– Cake tells the story of a weird and obsessed baker “Tomiwa Akinlolu” who fancies himself in love with one of his customers; Chalya (played by Sophie Alakija). Chalya is engaged but Tomiwa stalks her, constantly dreams about her, plans and executes their wedding in his head and even tries to kill her fiancé in the process. All the while, he ignored his assistant – Mfon (played by Folu Storms) who had a crush on him.

Tomiwa lands in jail after he mistakenly poisoned Chalya and while serving his jail term, he decides that he actually loves Mfon (his assistant), so he promised to marry her after he completes his jail term.🤮🤮

Cake is a movie that fails to live up to even the minimum standards of the genre it claims to belong to.

Romantic comedies are typically cute, lighthearted and funny. Sparks fly, love happens, there is a temporary problem , the problem is resolved and we have our happy ending.

In this movie, there was no cute story, no romance, no love, no triangle, no attraction, no affection, no connection, no comedy.

The movie started well. Great picture quality, beautiful setting but after about 30mins, it became apparent that this was a misguided attempt at a love story.

They did not give us a character we could like.

  • Tomiwa looked scruffy
  • He was not a nice person, he was only nice to Chalya
  • He had a detailed honeymoon plan for a lady who was unaware that he had a crush on her, a woman that was engaged.
  • He poisoned the cake Chalya ordered for her fiancé.
  • He constantly conversed with his late mother’s image and also imagined that she was responding to him by making different facial expressions.

With these few points of mine, I hope I have been able to convince you that this lead actor is not anybody’s idea of a Prince Charming. He had deep mental health issues that were not addressed.

Casting and acting was not great, but I won’t even blame the actors because I have seen them do better. I saw Mfon in the movie Charge and Bail and she was Brilliant, Sophie Alakija has been impressive in the last few months as well.

As for Tomiwa the lead character, he was very off, but it will be unfair to judge him based on this movie, so I’ll reserve my comment.

Special accolades to Jimoh (played by Emmanuel Jibunor), he entertained us in his own little way. If not for Jimoh, we would have slept off in the cinema.

Plot progression was just off, dialogue was weak, no emotions whatsoever, no dramatic momentum, everything was flat.

Finally, what was that end???? Let me explain.

Remember I mentioned earlier that Tomiwa went to jail for almost killing Chalya? So to end it all, they showed us that Mfon went to visit Tomiwa in jail.

He told her that she is the real love of his life. Mfon blushed and smiled, she agreed to run his business in his absence and wait to marry him after his jail term. I cringed, how does that make any sense?!!

He never liked her, he never saw her, even when she tried to be nice or even have personal conversations, he would snap at her and be very rude. There only spoke about work.

So after he landed in jail for almost killing another woman, they thought it was alright for Mfon to still marry him????

I don’t think a woman reviewed this story for them. Mfon deserved better. She deserved better than Tomiwa the stalker and ex-convict who did not even like her to start with! (I was so pissed😭)

Overall, this movie was not properly thought out at alllll.

Rating: 2/10
