The American King – A Review

Sebastian (played by Akon) is an American, he is a broke ex-convict trying to hustle enough money to pay his debts. Suddenly, a mysterious priestess (played by Nse Ikpe- Etim) travels all the way to the United States to tell Sebastian that he has been chosen by the Oracle to be the next king. He is to rebuild Africa and Make Africa Great Again (MAGA).

Imagine a little bit of Coming to America, a little bit of Wakanda, a bit Tyler Perry’s Madea and a generous sprinkle of Africa Magic Igbo ?

Can you picture it? Then you have a clear picture of the movie, The American King.

Wooden performances, laughable dialogue, and shoddy production values, this movie was a lesson in confusion.

The plot was not coherent, why exactly did the Oracle choose Sebastian? Which Oracle? How exactly was he supposed to reunite Africa?

Casting and acting was very poor. Akon was the lead actor and I was just wondering why? Why stress this old man?

I don’t know where they got all those white people from but those people could not act at all.

This movie was declared Nse and Enyinna‘s Hollywood debut but I am of the opinion that they should not have bothered, this is not a good way to launch an international career, they looked like clowns. Even their presence could not help this movie.

Audio was terrible. Voices where overshadowed by the background music and the most annoying part is that none of the songs were appropriate for the scenes. For example, during Sebastian’s coronation, the song that was playing in the background was “girl I’m in love, I never see this kain love, I can’t explain this feeling, you are my Oyoyo” Oyoyo for what???!

Costume and makeup was off, I don’t understand that iron armor and hat Nse wore all through the movie but I’m sure she suffered a lot, that thing must have been heavy because she could barely move her neck.

Enyinna had this dark makeup around his eyes, I don’t know what purpose that was supposed to serve but he looked like “The Undertaker”

Even though I was irritated by so many things in this movie, the most annoying part was the fact that this movie that claims to be teaching “African history” was so unrepresentative of Africa.

First, they kept on saying, things like the kingdom of Africa, the king of Africa, the divine oracle of Africa, they even said the priestess has come to take back an American king back to rebuild the kingdom of Africa, which kingdom exactly??? Is Africa one country? Africa is a continent with so many countries and cultures.

If they did not want to spotlight a particular country or culture, then they should have taken the time to craft an identity, a language, culture and style for their fictitious country similar to what we had in Wakanda. But these people decided to take the lazy route, some people wore Yoruba outfits, some Igbo, some Hausa, some Ghanaian Kente. Nse spoke a language that sounded like Efik. I was just confused.

Let me shock you, the African elders who traveled all the way to America to pick the King all had American accent, the child that welcomed the king when he got to “Africa” had an American accent, The main girl had an American accent. Only Nse and Enyinna did not sound American.

The “African palace” had so many white people. The African man who was brought to the king’s court for stealing a tuber of yam was wearing a nice gold chain and he had a foreign accent😩

Character development was just so poor!

Our goal should be to educate the world about Africa and it’s people but this movie is the most inauthentic expression of Africa that I have seen in a while. It misinforms and shamelessly misrepresents. With every dialogue and every scene, all I saw was ignorant people trying to speak for a people they have not even taken the time to study.

I won’t even try to talk about their fake American CIA and American president or their slogan Make Africa great Again (MAGA). I was just fed up!

The end was even more annoying, I don’t know whose concert videos they borrowed but for the King’s coronation, they super imposed images from someone’s concert or rally. I was just laughing o.

We started the year 2022 with Chief Daddy 2 but this movie is worse than Chief Daddy 2 because they had this faux revolutionary or political posturing that just did not work!

This movie was written and directed by Adah Obekpa, I really would like to have a conversation with the person to ask what exactly he was thinking when he wrote this movie and to ask him to refund my 4k

Overall, it was Illogical and it was a mess.
