My Village People tells the story of a rich Lagos man who visits his village for his sister’s wedding. He is advised not to touch or hug anyone but he disobeys and that was the beginning of his woes.
In normal Nigerian parlance, when you say village people, it means people from a person’s extended family or hometown, working overtime to cause misfortune for the person through diabolical means. The movie My village people does not pretend to be anything order than what the title suggests. Witches, wizards, mermaids, spiritual and terrestrial experts were all duly represented.
I must start by saying this is a comedy but not just your everyday Nigerian comedy, it’s a horror- comedy ( comedy mixed with horror).
The story line was good, well thought out and plot progression was coherent. There was just the right amount of humor to balance out the scary scenes.
If you grew up watching Nollywood movies, stories about witches and wizards were very common but this movie portrays a very different picture. The witches in this movie do not look ugly and wretched, even their coven and their outfits looked like what you would expect a coven to look like in the 21st century.
I think the movie humanized these spiritual beings. Contrary to the impression that witches are only old women and men, it showed that we live in a spiritual world and so many fine guys and ladies we see everyday are actually spiritual beings, so many of them even have spiritual problems pursuing them. Beard gang, bone straight gang, light skinned or dark skinned, big bumbum, big breast, your spec, infact any spec at all can be a witch and you won’t suspect because “witchcraft no Dey show for face😢”. This fact made the movie scary for me.
I liked the effects, the lighting, thunder, rain, everything worked. I especially liked the scenes with the birds (I think they were bats), very nice touch.
Casting and acting was soooo good, starting from Bovi himself, he is not a comedian who thinks he can’t act, Bovi can actually act. This movie was the perfect opportunity for Sophie to show the world how much she has grown as an actress, she was bold, she was fierce and I loved it. I noticed Theresa Edem for the first time in this movie and I was really impressed.
It is sad to mention that 2 characters from the movie are dead (Rachael Oniga and Ada Ameh). They were amazing actresses, we pray that their souls rest in peace.
I believe everyone in this movie did really well. It was good to see old nollywood stars and some of the new generation actors work together.
The movie was really long but truthfully I can’t pinpoint any scene that should have been removed. So I can’t fault them for unnecessary scenes.
The audio was acting up while I watched, some scenes I could barely hear and some scenes were echoing. I must however mention that this was not the case when I saw it in the cinema last year so not sure what the issue is.
I was wondering how they would round it up, I was praying they won’t go cliche and say it was a dream, I did not expect that his sister would turn out to be the chosen because she watched her brother go through all that torment, so mean😭, but she is a witch so I guess she was just being witchy, I thought it was a very befitting ending.
Lessons learnt:
As I go into the new week, I will be more careful about the things I say and the promises I make no matter how harmless they seem. You might be joking and someone somewhere is taking your words seriously.
Overall, it was a nice watch and if you have not seen it, you should definitely check it out.
