The series follows the lives of 5 young women and how they juggle their careers, finances and relationships.
I loooooved the storyline. This series is a beautiful portrayal of what friendship looks like when women genuinely love and care about themselves. It was centered on a topic every millennial understands “money”.
It is one thing to have a good story, it is another thing to know how to tell the story in a logical and coherent manner. The story telling was simple, straight to the point and relatable. At some point I could see myself and some of my friends in the characters.
Casting and acting was a win for me. They took time to develop the characters such that each lady had a distinct personality, a unique voice and a peculiar story. ALL the actors bodied their roles. It was easy to see that they were not just supporting characters, at one point or the other, each woman took the center stage.
Not at any point did the story leave the audience confused or unsure of what was going on. We were able to feel their emotions, the frustration and anger (I felt like slapping Mr SOJ so many times) , the pettiness (when Lara gave Banke that gbas gbos at the birthday party ehn, I was just cheering her on or when Adesuwa dealt with SOJ’s mother), the joy and everything in between. It almost seemed like I was their 6th friend. The romance was beautiful to watch, it was soft, it was sooo mushy and we could see the progress.
This series shows that being a series does not justify a scattered plot with unexplainable occurrences and inconsistencies. Even though they left room for other issues that can be explored in another season such as Temi’s story, Lara’s story, and even Ladun’s story as she learns to live life without her father-in-law’s billions, they brought pending issues and sub plots to a logical conclusion. So after watching the movie I did not feel confused or dissatisfied.
Truthfully it gets tiring when you watch bad movies back to back, so I am thankful that this series was not a waste of my time and also because it was a major eye opener. Personally, it showed me that I need to be more intentional about my finances and for the movie industry at large, it proves that every day life as we know it, even our peculiar societal landscape is replete with issues that can be explored to produce great movies. Movies that people can identify with and appreciate.
Overall, i enjoyed this series and I can say I will be willing to watch a season 2.
The Smart Money Woman is available on Netflix.
