Summary: This movie tells the story of Bolanle- a young customer care representative and how she finds love in a pandemic.
It was not a bad watch but it was not great either.
Picture quality was good, everything was really bright and colourful.
Acting and casting worked to a large extent. Nothing outstanding but nobody did a poor job.
The story was not bad, but it was not compelling.
Plot progression was coherent but it lacked any form of dramatic depth.
There were no glaring loop holes but this suspense free storytelling offers so little in the way of dramatic momentum.
What am i trying to say? The movie was not interesting.
About Love – The movie lacked heart. No chemistry, no compelling moments showing how their love story progressed. This movie missed the opportunity to show creative ways that romantic relationships evolved during the pandemic. Virtual dates, virtual movie nights, virtual walks, virtual games night…the list is endless. Asides from talking over the phone a couple of times, we did not really see much about them falling in love. Love story that does not have any awwwwwn moments is that a love story?
In a…
Pandemic – This movie did not do justice to portraying the pandemic. From the way it was set up, this movie could have happened even without the pandemic element because people dial wrong numbers all the time.
This movie was unable to show and capture the fear and anxiety, the despondency that ruled people’s minds during the pandemic. COVID – 19 is a reality we all lived through, this movie would have resonated better if we saw familiar COVID tropes that would just make us remember “ahhhhh, those dark times”
The characters in this movie just carried on like nothing was happening, Bolanle was not worried about losing her job, about running out of money, they did not have zoom meetings, she did not complain about the endless social media challenges, she was not constantly waiting for news updates, she did not try any home remedies, not once did she imagine that she had COVID. After she went shopping one time, she did not go shopping for the entire year she was at home, she did not order groceries online, she did not have to sanitize her groceries….I could go on and on but those were dark days that affected every area of daily life and this movie did not even scratch the surface….. it was a very poor attempt, they should not have bothered.
Character development was not great. Bolanle looked and lived like a tech sis. The house, the furnishing, her gadgets, even her laptop……….that is not the reality of underpaid and overworked people who work as customer care representatives for logistics companies. Did they even do any research?
I did not like the voice over or narration, it was awkward!
I did not get the emphasis on Bolanle’s weight because in the long run, it had no significance to the movie.
I did not understand the cooking show that they introduced, nobody needed to see that, nobody asked to see that, the whole Ultimate Chef Show idea (from the invite Bolanle received to the final competition) was terrible
The dialogue was poor, this movie had no high points. In fact when Alex was rushing to Lagos and he got to a point where there was traffic and he started running, I was just wondering why are you running? What is the rush? Where are you going? Then baba fell…..It was so embarrassing
The end was as awkward as the rest of the movie. What happened to the pandemic? Was it over? Did they lift the lockdown already? What was that awkward date?!!!!
Overall, Love in a Pandemic is not a bad film but it is a dull and tension free drama. It lacks any dramatic fireworks, an unimpressive take at a romance film and most importantly, it is a lazy representation of the Covid-19 pandemic.
